Gary-Ross Pastrana, an artist known for sculptural installations as well as curating, started collaging in 1999 as a self-imposed challenge to learn through practice. Well-received at the recently concluded Asian Contemporary Art Fair in New York City, Pastrana's recent works, which combine geometric cutouts with torn pages paralleling the controlled and the accidental, will be shown. The collages are deliberately non-figurative, absent of texts or symbols, scribbles or handwriting of any kind. Presented in framed grids, they focus on the range of possibilities offered by found printed material, its texture, shape and color which calls for a more mature and RESTRAINED sense of composition. Gary-Ross Pastrana was the Philippine representative to the 2008 Busan Biennale in Korea. He was awarded the Cultural Center of the Philippines Thirteen Artists Award in 2006. Gary-Ross Pastrana’s show at 20Square will run from December 4, 2008 to January 3, 2009. Accompanying the show is Bedtime Stories by Bea Valdes at the SLab main gallery and the Silverlens Foundation 2008 Grantees Exhibition at Silverlens.
