SENSE I: Silverlens Gallery Photography Workshops
January-February 2009


PHOTO 1 - CAMERAS AND TECHNIQUES
(5 sessions, starts January 14, Wednesdays, 6-8pm)
Instructor: Johann Espiritu. Fee: P6,500.00
Designed for the beginning photographer, students learn about camera handling and operation, principles of exposure, shutter speed, aperture, focal length, and basic composition and lighting. The course outline includes shooting assignments and critiques, which encourage students to practice photography techniques and to develop confidence behind the lens. There are no prerequisites for this course.


PHOTO 2 - EXPOSURE TO PHOTOGRAPHERS
(5 sessions, starts January 13, Tuesdays, 6-8pm)
Instructor: Rachel Rillo. Fee: P6,500.00
A bridge class between learning technique in PHOTO 1 and Exploring Expression in PHOTO 3, this class is a mix of third world tips for first world images in terms of lighting, technique. The class emphasizes design in photography and exploration of genres such as street and documentary photography, fashion and commercial photography, and art photography.
Prerequisites: PHOTO 1 or portfolio review (email portfolios to manage@silverlensph oto.com)


PHOTO 3 - PHOTOGRAPHY AS EXPRESSION
(8 sessions, starts January 15, Thursdays, 6-8pm)
Instructor: Isa Lorenzo. Fee: P9,000.00
This course will encourage students to follow their instincts and obsessions as a way to strengthen their directions, visions, and voices. By reviewing other photographer' s work, completing class assignments, and participating in critiques, students will expand their understanding of photography as a contemporary medium of expression. This course is ideal for students who are ready to begin a photography project.

THE PHOTO JOURNAL
(4 sessions, January 17, 24, 31, February 7, 1-4pm)
Instructor: Kidlat de Guia. Fee: P7,000.00
Photographing our daily lives to make a journal of sorts is the best way to evaluate and transform the way we see things. Students will embark on a path to self-discovery, having to photograph everyday for the duration of the course, regardless of other commitments. The contact sheet, whether analog or digital, will form a structure for seeing by mapping the daily evolution of perception. Students will produce individual journals that will provide a framework for their imagery and writing. By the end of the course, students will have uncovered new aspects of their creativity and themselves.


THE IDEA OF CREATIVITY IN PHOTOGRAPHY
(6 sessions, starts Feb. 18, Wednesdays, 6-8pm)
Instructor: Johann Espiritu. Fee: P 7,500.00
How does one become creative in the realistic medium of photography? This course aims to answer the personal questions of what creativity means to you by examining why photography came to be, and how to take advantage of its unique characteristics as a means of creative self-expression.


PORTFOLIO REVIEW
(2 sessions, Jan. 17 and Jan. 24, 4-6pm)
Panelists: Kidlat de Guia, Isa Lorenzo, Rachel Rillo, Lilen Uy. Fee: P500.00


ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS:


KIDLAT DE GUIA graduated with a degree in Broadcast Communication from the University of the Philippines. In 2003, his video “Banal Tubig, Banal Kahoy” received the Award of Excellence in the Aqua Planet Video Festival in Seian, Japan. Kidlat was also one of the 10 chosen participants of the Peter Bialobrezski workshop given by the Geothe Institut in Silverlens Gallery last January. He is currently working as a freelance documentary filmmaker and photographer.


JOHANN ESPIRITU has had several exhibits, and is currently working on two books which should be out later this year. His work has been displayed in newspapers, magazines, billboards and even featured in limited-edition postage stamps. Two of his photos were named as part of the 200 Best Images of 2006 by Epson Philippines. A lawyer by profession, Johann was admitted to the Philippine Bar in 2001 and to the New York State Bar in 2004.


ISA LORENZO graduated from the New School University-Parsons School of Design in New York City with a Master of Arts in Media Studies and Photography. She has shown at the Museum of Modern Art, the International Center of Photography, and the Thomas Werner Gallery, all in New York City; and at the UNESCO House in Paris; and at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and Silverlens Gallery in Manila. Her work has been collected in the United States and Asia. She is currently the Creative Director of Silverlens, inc., a gallery specializing in photography and new media.


RACHEL RILLO graduated from the Academy of Art College, San Francisco. In 2000 she moved to Los Angeles to work as a freelance photographer for the television industry. Her clients include FOX TV, UPN, CBS and NBC shooting publicity photographs for the news and shows. Her photography has been published in the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Magazine, La Opinion, and other major publications in the LA area. In the15 years of living in the US, Rachel Rillo has shown her fine art work in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Houston. Her work has also been shown at the Silverlens Gallery in Manila.


LILEN UY graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, Major in Commercial Photography from the Brooks Institute of Photography. She has been working as a freelance photographer since 2000 and currently operated Tao Photography, a commercial photographic studio. She has exhibited for silverlens, Avon Manila, Summit Publishing/J Walter Thompson. She has exhibited in the Temasek Polytechnic School of Design, Notices Gallery, and Gallery 21 in Singapore. She has also worked on various book projects in Singapore.
