Noel Cabangon is the voice behind the popular song "Kanlungan" or
"Pana-panahon" as most people would call it. He is a singer,
songwriter, and a musical director. He started as a folksinger in 1982
and since then he has been performing in bars, folk houses, music
lounges and concerts in Metro Manila. Noel has also performed in
several concerts outside the country. His latest albums include:
"Pasakalye," "Medjas," "H'wag Mangamba," and "Noel." He was a
recipient of the 17th Awit Awards in 2004.
Since the `80s, Noel was actively involved in the creation and
popularization of Alternative Filipino Music. He has performed in
Paris, France during the Bi-Centennial celebration of the French
Revolution in 1989. He has also done concert tours in Hong Kong,
Germany, The Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Geneva and Brazil.
In the early `90s, while continuously performing in folk houses, he
and his former group `Buklod' produced and released three albums:
"Bukid at Buhay," "Tatsulok," and "Sa Kandungan ng Kalikasan." These
albums contain pictures and aspirations of the Filipinos.
As a songwriter, his entry `Dito sa Kanto', made it as finalist to the
1999 MetroPop Music Festival. His song "Ikaw ay Bayani" was a tribute
to the Filipino modern day heroes that also made it to the finals of
ABS-CBN's"Himig Handog sa Bayaning Pilipino 2000." He was also a
finalist to the Asian Songwriting Festival Local Search also in year
2000 with his song "Ikaw Lang." And since then, Noel has been writing
songs for mainstream artists like Agot Isidro, Randy Santiago,
Dingdong Avanzado, Nikki Gil and Cesar Montano and many others.
Noel has also written songs for TV and radio commercials, movie theme
songs, and also music scoring for short films and video documentaries.
Aside from being a recognized singer-songwriter, Noel is also an
artist-member of the Philippine Educational Association (PETA). He has
been musical director to several PETA plays which include: "Ang
Tiririt ng Ibong Adarna," "Summer Dreaming'," "Don Guillermo," Romeo
at Juliet: Icing Comedy," (a collaboration with the Black Tent Theater
of Japan), "Dream Weavers," and most recently, "Mega Kwando in Lola
Busying," and "Waling Himalaya". He has also joined the casts of
Peat's musicale "1896," where he played the role of Jose Rizal, and
Jesus Christ Superstar Rock Opera playing the role of Jesus, which was
shown at the Music Museum and 70s Bistro.
Noel is an active member of Catha, an association of Filipino
composers, FILSCAP (Filipino Society of Composers, Authors, and
Publishers), an Ambassador for Conservation of Harrison Foundation, a
board member of Freedom from Debt Coalition (FDC), a volunteer for
Rock-Education (Rock-end), involved in the campaigns of World Wildlife
Fund, Greenpeace, Amnesty International, Global Call to Action Against
Poverty, Jubilee South Network and many other organizations.
In 2004, Noel was a recipient of the Service Awards given by the
Provincial Government of La Union, for his outstanding service and
invaluable contribution to culture and the arts.
Noel has just recently released his new album "Himig Nating Pag-ibig",
a collection of Filipino love songs mostly originally written by Noel.
The album also revisits the timeless OPM ballads – "Ang Himig Natin",
a Juan de la Cruz Band original, and "Ang Himig Ng Pag-ibig", one of
the most beautiful Pinoy love songs ever written, composed by Lolita
Carbon and originally recorded by Asin. With Noel's gift for creating
hook-laden melodies and writing heartfelt and inspirational lyrics,
his songs are often chosen as theme music for various consumer brands.
Included in this album are "Kanlungan", featured in a food chain
commercial a few years back. Most recently, he was also commissioned
by Julie's Bakeshop to compose and record a theme song in celebration
of their 25th Anniversary entitled "Nariyan Ka Lang Sa Tabi," serving
as the music bed to its television commercial. The first radio single
culled from this album is "Nag-iisa, Wala Ka Na", which Noel casually
describes as `the song with the most contemporary sound' in the album.
True enough, the song was readily picked-up by mainstream pop and
alternative radio stations. These and other songs from this album
depict the many facets of love, as seen through the eyes and sung from
the heart of Noel Cabangon.
Revisit… move on…celebrate life, love, and music.
