Kidlat Tahimik and Dr. Benedict Anderson are the Key Note Speakers for the 5th Annual Southeast Asian Cinemas Conference, happening this November 20-22 at the Ateneo de Manila University.
With the theme States of Independence, ASEACC will open with the key note address to be delivered by the father of Philippine independent cinema himself – Kidlat Tahimik. Multi-awarded filmmaker Kidlat (Eric de Guia) is known for his films Mababangong Bangungot (Perfumed Nightmares) and Turumba. Heralding cinematic independence and the search for "sariling dwende," Kidlat is respected for his sensibilities, wisdom and craft. He has recently been given the lifetime achievement award for filmmaking during the Gawad Urian rites last October 1.
Dr. Benedict Anderson, professor emeritus of Cornell University, will deliver the closing remarks of the conference. Anderson is best known for his book Imagined Communities, in which he systematically describes the major factors contributing to the emergence of nationalism in the world. Anderson defined a nation as "an imagined political community that is imagined as both inherently limited and sovereign". He currently teaches in the International Studies at Cornell, and heads its Indonesian program. He is also widely regarded as an authority on twentieth-century Indonesian history and politics, and has a particular research interest in Southeast Asian culture and dynamics.
Both Kidlat and Anderson will be present for the whole duration of the conference.
