Exhibit: DECONSTRUCTIONISM

"Deconstructionism" is American fine artist Marty McCorkle's first Philippine exhibition of oil paintings on canvas that challenges the way we conventionally see the world through his unraveling representational painting style.

Marty McCorkle is a fine artist whose passion for combining painting with digital imagery has opened painting to unexplored realms that defy simple description. The artist seeks to depict experience’s choppy, fragmentary nature over which the mind’s eye endlessly applies an imaginary order.

“The two grand hallucinations that we habitually indulge in— memories of pasts that never occurred and conjectures about futures that never arise as imagined—provide the fecund voids that I visually mine.”

"Deconstructionism" is on show at Ricco Renzo Galleries, 2nd Floor, LRI Design Plaza, 210 N. Garcia St. (formerly Reposo), Bel Air 2, Makati City from February 13 to March 20, 2009.

An artist's reception with open cocktails takes place at 7pm on the 13th February.

A grand prize win at Yokohama: Rhosam Prudenciado Jr.

It is with great joy and pride that Wi-fi Body Festival and the Contemporary Dance Network Philippines announces that our official representative to the Yokohama Solo x Duo Competition, Rhosam Prudenciado Jr. has won the Grand Prize.

Sam won for his expanded version of "Which Way," which placed second at the New Choreographers Competition at Wi-fi Body Festival 3 in 2008. As one of the winners of our competition, his entry was endorsed to the Yokohama Competition, where he was chosen as one of 15 finalists.

Held to uncover, support, and train promising young choreographers from around the world, the Yokohama Solo x Duo + received 192 entries from fourteen countries this year, a new record. The fifteen finalists, selected by screening the videos they submitted, competed for prizes.

Rhosam shall embark on a six month study in France as part of his prize.

Critically acclaimed Up dharma Down headlines a free concert at the Ortigas Park on Feb. 27.

Book, art, and music lovers are invited to attend the myriad of activities lined up by the Ortigas Foundation, Inc. (OFI) in celebration of its 13^th anniversary.

On Feb. 20 and 21, “Booked at the Ortigas Park” showcases great titles from noted publishing houses and dealers. The 30-piece Quezon City Symphonic Band takes the stage and serenades with standard Filipino pieces and other pop hits for a post-Valentine high.

Kids of all ages are invited to go to the Ortigas Park on Feb. 21, 2 to 4 p.m. for Ilustrador ng Kabataan’s live illustration showcase. Catch in action the country’s premier organization of artists for children.

“I’m involved with someone else” is usually an unpleasant thing to hear, but this time it’s actually a welcome statement. Be involved with someone else – volunteer for OFI’s social development projects. Sign up and pledge hours of volunteer work at the Ortigas Foundation booth at the Ortigas Park. To close out the week-long festivities at the Ortigas Park, internationally acclaimed band Up dharma Down headlines a free concert at the venue, supported by Paramita, Sleepwalk Circus, and Ang Bandang Shirley – excellent groundbreaking bands from indie label Terno Recordings.

Over at the Ortigas Foundation’s Artists Nook of the Ortigas Building, award-winning painter Reynold “Rendy” dela Cruz displays more than a dozen creations depicting children in his aptly titled selling exhibition Kaluskos Musmos from February 26 onwards. Finally, poetry lovers group Pinoy Poets celebrates its fifth year with featured lecturer Edgar Samar talking about the novel’s views of poetry.

BLACK AND WHITE Photography is perfect for anyone who would like to learn about the real basics of photography. Get to know the rules and techniques that can only be learned first hand via 35mm Manual SLR. Learn about composing subject, getting the perfect angle, adjusting the right shutter speed and of course, go through the highs of developing your own prints at the UPFI Photo lab. The workshop culminates in an exhibit at the Ishmael Bernal Gallery of UPFI in Diliman.

Workshop will be facilitated and monitored by Professor Anne De Guzman, having years of experience in photography and film. She is also the Director of the UP Film Institute and a Faculty member specializing in Black and White Photography and Experimental Film. Classes will start on February 14, 2009 which will run for 5 consecutive Saturdays of intensive learning on the fundamentals of Black and White photography.

SLab (Silverlens Lab) is proud to announce the opening of Bukod Tanging Pag-Ibig: A Don Fernando Register by Jose Tence “Bogie” Ruiz on February 18, Wednesday at 6pm. A contemporary response to National Artist Fernando Amorsolo, the show is comprised of Ruiz's paintings and sculpture. Ruiz studied painting in the 1970's when the Amorsolo method was a template both learned yet resisted, as Ruiz struggled to carve his own idiom in the decades of nascent postmodernism. Ruiz elaborates, “We hold to differing contexts, and my homage/deconstructi ons of the Master will bear this out. As with the solitary joy of painting. Amorsolo could not have been better named. In poetic Filipino, his name might be recast as ‘Bukod-Tanging Pag-Ibig,’ descriptive of the irreplaceable satisfaction that painting, and now the multi-media facture of visuals, allows its devotees.“

For over 30 years, Jose Tence Ruiz has been involved in multi-media visual activities such as set design, publication design, book illustration, media presentations, teaching, editorial illustration, painting, art for advocacy, sculpture, installation and performance art. He is an ARAW ng Maynila Awardee for New Media (2003), and one of the few Five Time AAP Award Winners (1979–2005). He currently works as a multi- media artist and an independent writer/consultant/ curator for such institutions as the Cultural Center of the Philippines, The National Commission for Culture and the Arts, The Pasig City Arts Museum, Neo-Angono Artists Collective and The Ateneo Art Gallery.

Bukod Tanging Pag-ibig: A Don Fernando Register by Jose Tence Ruiz runs from February 18-March 21, 2009 at SLab (Silverlens Lab). There will be two Saturday talks by Ruiz, both from 3-5pm. The talk on March 7 will be “Krokis na Tumatalab (The Efficascent Sketch),” and on March 21 “Mga Talinhagang Misteryoso’t Mababangis (Mysterious and Brutish Tropes). Bukod Tanging Pag-ibig will be shown along with The Passing of Light 2: Book of Illumination by Emmanuel Santos at Silverlens Gallery and Metallurgy of Desire by Conrado Velasco at 20Square.

Conrado Velasco will have an exhibition at 20Square Gallery from February 10 to 28, 2009. The show, Metallurgy of Desire,will be composed of altered pages from fashion magazines. A former art director/photograph er at GAP and Banana Republic, Velasco knows this world well.

An artist talk is scheduled to coincide with the show's closing reception on February 28, at 5pm. The talk will touch on a myriad of topics that form Velasco's current interests and influences. Following the artist talk, a new set of visual electronic compositions called Synthetic Haikus will be projected in the gallery.

Conrado Velasco's work inhabits the spaces where art, design, commerce and technology intersect. His career runs the whole range of disciplines - graphic design, photography, sculpture, industrial design, visual merchandising, illustration, motion graphics and electronic arts. For him the future of art lies in the volatile mix of technology and ideas. Conrado Velasco was born in Manila and is a graduate of the University of the Philippines. He has been an awardee of the Silverlens Foundation Photography Acquisition Grant for two years in a row. He presently divides his time between Ireland and the Philippines.

Metallurgy of Desire will run from February 10 to 28, 2009 at 20Square. Conrado Velasco will have an artist talk on Feb. 28, 5pm, followed by the show’s closing reception. The Philippine International Visual Arts Fest '09 (PIVAF'09)!

It will be a convergence of selected various Filipino and
International Artists from the different regions of the country. it
will feature the talents and performances of the artists and groups in
the visual arts (Painting, photography, sculpture, printmaking,
multimedia and installation) whose trainings, competitions and
creative expressions it has invested the past year or so.

For 18 years now, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts
(NCCA) has been organizing the National Arts Month (NAM) in the month
of February with a series of festivities and activities mounted
throughout the country celebrating Filipino artistry and promoting the
arts and the artists. For 2009, the celebration takes a leap by going
international under the name Philippine International Arts Festival
(PIAF).
All over the country, different arts and culture groups as well as
local governments will hold events for the PIAF with funding and
support from the NCCA. With the theme â€œAni ng Sining,â€� the PIAF has
evolved from Manila-centered activities to a truly national event with
key activities in all three major island groups, Luzon, Visayas,
Mindanao, involving hundreds of artists from different disciplines of
arts and reaching thousands of people from all walks of life and all
over the world.

FORUM: "Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang: Political Repression in the Academe"

You are all invited to the forum "Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang: Political Repression in the Academe" with speakers Faculty Regent Judy Taguiwalo, Alliance of Concerned Teachers Chair Tonchi Tinio, All UP Academic Union President-Diliman Chapter Ramon Guillermo, Student Regent Shan Abdul-Wahid, and under seige UP Sociology Professor Sarah Raymundo. Former UP Faculty Arni Trinidad will also comment on the issue of the tenure process.

Speakers will be discussing the militarization of the campus, counter-insurgency role of the Civil Military Operations Batallion, lack of transparency in the tenure process that paves the way for political persecution, and other forms of political repression in all branches of the education sector, among others.

This event will be held at the UP Recto Hall, Feb 3, Tuesday, 1-4 pm.

More than a way of looking back at past accomplishments, the festival will be a celebration of the fruits of the creative efforts for the past year and a looking forward to a richer, more fertile ground in the coming years for the evolution of artistic modes of expression available to the Filipino creative imagination.

The National Arts Month started with Presidential Proclamation No. 683 in 1991. Now, the NCCA, led by its Chairman, DepEd Usec. Dr. Vilma Labrador and Executive Director and PA on Culture Cecile Guidote-Alvarez, through the NAM Artistic Committee headed by Prof. Ricardo de Ungria, Commissioner of the NCCA-Subcommission on the Arts (SCA), is taking the celebration to the next level by calling National Arts Month the Philippine International Arts Festival (PIAF) for next year.

Selected artists from different countries are expected to join in the different PIAF events through the PIAF Artistic Committee in coordination with the Philippine International Theatre Institute (ITI) through its Sec. General Malou Jacob, also concurrent NCCA Deputy Executive Director.

All over the country, different arts and culture groups as well as local governments will hold events for the PIAF with funding and support from the NCCA. With the theme "Ani ng Sining," the PIAF has evolved from Manila-centered activities to a truly national event with key activities in all three major island groups, Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, involving hundreds of artists from different disciplines of arts and reaching thousands of people from all walks of life and all over the world.

Some of the highlights to look forward to in the PIAF on February 2009 are;

· The Ani ng Sining Launching. PIAF Ani ng Sining will formally open in two venues: Sining Gising of NBN 4 and Concert at the Park (6pm) with delayed telecast in NBN 4. Philippine International Arts Festival will also simultaneously be launched in major sites in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. · PA(ng)LABAS. The project is a composite of a traveling exhibition, lecture-forum, and a film showing which will examine both the medium of film and the form and style of architecture as they relate to the development of film media, architecture and urban landscape. The title Pa(ng)labas is doubly coded to encompass both the concepts of projected moving image (palabas) and the exteriority of architecture (panglabas) to establish a sense of place. It will happen on February 10, 2009 (4pm) with an opening and symposium at the Forefront Gallery and Aldaba Hall University Theater, University of the Philippines - Diliman; and from February 17 to 21, 2009, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). · Walai-Vernacular Architecture of Mindanao. This is an architectural drawing and photography exhibit of the vernacular houses of Mindanao culled from the Walai Pangampong project, complemented with a lecture series, selected ritual dances and craft works associated with house building and construction, and a model replica of selected indigenous structure. It is slated from February 6-13 at General Santos City and Feb. 20-28 at the University of San Agustin, Iloilo City. (Contact Person: Arch. Michael Ang)

· Sinerehiyon. This is a showcase of nascent cinema from the regions. From the highlands in and around Baguio to the heart of Bicolandia that is Naga City; across the thriving Visayas cities of Cebu, Bacolod and Iloilo; and through Mindanao between Cagayan de Oro and Davao, a new generation of artists is telling stories of their own cultures and people in cinematic form. · Sayaw Pinoy. This touring dance concert brings together different dance forms and features local dance troupes of the host cities and municipalities performing back-to-back with the different professional dance companies in the country. This will from February 6 to 9 for the Visayas and NCR regions; from February 13 to 16 for Mindanao; and February 20 to 23 for Luzon. · Tanghal! The 3rd National University Theater Festival. Hosted by Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Calamba, the event will feature university-based theatre groups from Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao and NCR in cooperation with the Lusong Luzon Arts and Culture Network. · Taboan: Philippine Writers Festival. This will happen from February 11 to 13, 2009 at the UP Diliman, Ateneo de Manila and Cubao Expo. · Organik Muzik. This is a series of four concerts showing the metamorphosis of elements of Philippine music from village roots to urban manifestations, from Cordillera traditions to Kadangyan's world music, from Leyteño siday to Junior Kilat's reggae Binisaya, from GAMABA Awardee Samaon Sulaiman's virtuoso kutyapi-playing to the hard-driving neo-ethnic rock of Popong Landero, from flights of Balagtasan to the acid-jazz rants of Lourd de Veyra and Radioactive Sago. Musical innovator Joey Ayala weaves the journey towards a coherent whole. It will happen on February 7, 2009 at SM Baguio; February 15, 2009 at SM Cebu; February 22, 2009 at SM Davao; and February 28, 2009 at Magway, Marikina Shoe Expo in Cubao. · Philippine Visual Arts Fest '09. February 18-22, 2009 to be held at Robinson's Place Ermita – Midtown and Robinson's Place – Pioneer. Caregiving Program of the commission, the NCCA will be tapping programs for artists like the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between NCCA and the Provincial government of Rizal headed by Gov. Jun Ynares for the Artists' Housing Village in Angono, the launching of the newly-restored Metropolitan Theater, and the unveiling of the Urdaneta Park in Urdaneta City, Pangasinan, in commemoration of Fray Andres de Urdaneta's 500^th year.

10th National Writers Workshop call for manuscripts

The office of the Writer-in-Residence of the University of Santo Tomas is now accepting manuscripts for the 10th National Writers Workshop to be held this May at UST.

The annual workshop is open to writers who have not been awarded fellowships to any national writers workshop.

An applicant should submit three printed copies (on short bond paper ) and a CD or diskette containing soft copies in MS Word format of his or her manuscript (at least five poems or two fiction or non-fiction pieces in English or Filipino). He or she should submit a resumé, a 2x2 ID photo, and a certification duly signed by an institution/company senior that the manuscript is authentic.

Fifteen fellowships are available, a percentage of which will be given to the Dominican Network of Schools, Colleges and Universities . Deadline is on March 15, 2009. Noted abstractionist Lao Lianben will present "Substance", a solo exhibition of recent works, at the blanc compound

This time the artist raises the level of his paintings' emotional pitch, intensifying the rendition of his favored themes such as his Buddhist Television series and his abstract portals of light. Now executed in spectacular large scale, the paintings are more heavily encrusted with dense materials which congeal and coagulate into thick massive clumps projecting from the canvas surface into cracked relief.. The process is visibly labor-intensive as the artist pushes the limits of the materials' expressive potential.

All the works in the show evince a compelling spirituality, an enshrined quality in the art of Lao Lianben. The artist exercises a magisterial hand in the disciplined orchestration of blacks, whites, and greys. As visual analogues for man's spiritual search, Lao's paintings draws out the impressive radiance of space and light. The paradox lies in the contrast between the airiness of feeling and the sheer weight and density of his material. In a landmark work titled "Substance", the artist liberates the spirit from the terrain of accumulated clumps of pigment.

Also impressive are Lao's variations on the Buddhist Television theme. Comprised of a fine and filigreed network of thinly flowing paint, the image turns into a cascade of wash, fluidly tearing its way down in a swift descent of many-layered streaks. In other works, Lao releases the potential of the schemarized human figure, emerging from an infinitely expansive field. A tableaux of hands, lifted in a gesture of benediction, have a strangely becalming effect.

Enrollment is now open for the 2^nd run of the Introduction to TV Commercial Directing Workshop offered by the International Institute for Film and Arts (IIFA) from February 24 to March 4, 2009. Participants will get a chance to learn from some of the most sought-after commercial directors in the country (Sid Maderazo, Raymond Red, Mark Meily, Mandy Reyes, Teddy Catuira, Raul Jorolan, Sockie Fernandez, Nap Jamir, Henry Frejas, Mike Alcazaren etc.), with IIFA President and the Commercials Directors Club of the Philippines' founder Cris Mojica as workshop master.

Those who wish to enroll are required to have had prior production experience (school/amateur or professional) in any capacity and will be tasked to participate in the production of a TV commercial as their workshop output. Movie icon Bembol Roco walks the mean streets of
Manila as “Kontra Madiaga,” a character invented by
combining the actor’s two most celebrated
performances: innocent country bumpkin Julio Madiaga
from 1975’s Manila in the Claws of Light and
death-squad leader Commander Kontra of 1989’s Fight
for Us. Haunted by memories of loss assembled from
snippets from these and other Lino Brocka films,
Kontra’s soul is long dead from butchering resistance
fighters, but the Madiaga part of him continues to
search Orpheus-like for the girl for whom he came to
the capital. Shot from the hip in a single day and
shot through with video-quotes from film history, this
is conceptual minimalism povera at its most
politically edgy.

World Premiere, VIENNA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL:
A sturdy man with a dark expression follows a delicate
beauty, clad in innocent white clothes, through the
streets of Manila. In his attempt to keep her away
from the trash and vice of the metropolis, he becomes
a murderer. Sometimes he simply stands around with his
arms folded, observing people in the streets and
unleashing tirades of hatred in the form of an inner
monologue. Yet at the same time, he repeatedly
proceeds to horrible crimes, which he considers
himself chosen to commit.

SYNOPSIS
"Manila In The Fangs Of Darkness" follows Kontra
Madiaga, a soul lost in an urban Hell trying to find
his beloved Ligaya. Trapped not only by time and his
deeds, his past is also framed by film and the scenes
that he is doomed to revisit.

We would like to invite you to "The Oneironaut*" (*one who explores the world of dreams) an exhibition of works by Marga Rodriguez, traverses the indistinct border that separates reality and dreaming. Essentially autobiographical in nature, the works in this exhibit suffuse Asian art iconographies with a near-inexpressible whirl of emotions. Rodriguez hints at the innermost recesses of her psyche, recounting her fascination with the mysteries of nightfall and of dreams. The images, while beautiful and mysterious, also conveys a sense of the angst, insecurity, suppressed feelings and wishes that often accompany the dream state.

For this exhibit, Rodriguez, usually a city-dweller, retreated to a remote rural setting on a farm in Batangas Province, where, in her own words, she "traveled without moving" while reinvigorating herself in a "creative slumber." The energies that were absorbed in this recuperative natural environment have been skillfully transmuted into the images presented in Rodriguez' magical canvases.

Atang, Dulang May Musika to be restaged in Jan/Feb

The story of the Queen of Sarsuwela and National Artist for Theater, Honorata "Atang" dela Rama is retold through her love letters to her husband, Amado Hernandez and memoirs juxtaposed with the different sarsuwela she was part of like "Dalagang Bukid".

IPAG’s ‘Year of the Ox’ openers

Welcome the Year of the Ox which augurs well for our dance, theater, the performing arts, and poetry.

The Integrated Performing Art Guild’s long-running Tales From Mindanao opens 2009 with shows at the Batangas State University in Bauan on January 9. (“Tales” in the last 18 years has played to full houses fascinating audiences estimated at almost a million around the country and in over a hundred cities worldwide.) It performs at the Xavier University in February 5 and 6 and at the Centro Escolar University in Manila on February 16-18.

To celebrate the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ 40 years, IPAG presents its landmark musical ‘Ranaw: Isang Alamat’ invited as one of the country's most accomplished groups restaging one of CCP’s most notable productions. The Ruby Celebrations demonstrate the exceptional achievements and artistic excellence of performing groups which the CCP has nurtured. ‘Ranaw’ performs February 20 and 21, 2:30 p.m. matinees and 7:30 p.m. gala shows at the CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater).

This coming Saturday, January 10, 2009, from 3-5pm, United States based artist Stella Kalaw will be giving an Artist Talk at Silverlens Gallery, as part of her show Family Spaces. In it, Kalaw will discuss the family as a photographic subject. Going beyond the snapshot, she will be presenting several approaches and ideas that explore this subject matter through her own work and personal projects from other contemporary photographers.

Stella Kalaw (b. 1969 in Manila) graduated with a degree in Professional Photography from the Brooks Institute of Photography in California and worked as an intern in Irving Penn’s Studio in New York City shortly after. Kalaw has been part of group shows in Washington, New York, California and at the Ayala Museum in Manila. Her works have garnered awards such as a Honorable Mention in the Polaroid International Awards and the Gold Prize in American Photo Magazine’s New Views Awards.

Family Spaces by Stella Kalaw opens on January 8 at 6pm and runs until February 7 at Silverlens Gallery. Family Spaces will be shown along with Library Bookworks by Renato Orara at SLab (Silverlens Lab).

Art Exhibit, Book Launch and Re-Opening of F* ART Gallery on January 8

World class Filipino talents will grace the re-opening of F*ART Fashion Art Gallery on Thursday, January 8 at 5pm.

Cheryl Villanueva-Hironaka , a renowned furniture designer and painter who has held exhibits in Paris, New York, Tokyo and Manila, will present her furniture creations and painting illustrations for a children's book entitled Martine's Dilemma.

Primavera Santos, the author of Martine's Dilemma based in Los Angeles, USA, will hold a book launch and signing on the re-opening party. The author's niece, Martine, who lives in Australia, will also attend the event.

Superb comedians Mike Unson and Uli Oposa will also be at the event to delightfully tickle the funny bones of the Martine’s Dilemma crowd.

Q and A interview with Ms. Cheryl Villanueva- Hironaka

Q 1: What makes this exhibit different from others you've had?

CVH: On this exhibit I’ll present illustrations used for a children’s book titled Martine’s Dilemma and a live art installation that will complement the exhibit. It will be different and fun. There will also be a book launch for Martine’s Dilemma during the opening party. Primavera Santos, the author of Martine’s Dilemma, will be present during the opening party to sign books. The book will be available for sale at the exhibit.

Q 2: How long have you been into painting? What got you into painting?

CVH: I’ve been painting since I learned to touch paint as a toddler, as every child who went to pre-school fingerpainting. But I started seriously painting when I moved to Paris in 1995. I was inspired by what I saw in museums and the beauty of the city. I was just learning French at the Sorbonne so I had plenty of free time to explore. I painted but never really showed my work to anyone. It was all very private because I was embarrassed that my style is very naïve. One day my classmate, Chizu, who is a Japanese artist already exhibiting at that time, came over to my apartment and unexpectedly stumbled upon my work and fell in love with it. She told me that I should share my work and start exhibiting and that she would present my portfolio to a gallery in Tokyo. Of course, I had no idea how to build a portfolio so she helped me create one. The gallery invited me to show in Tokyo back in 2000. Although prior to that, I had the opportunity to exhibit my furniture in a Paris library in Places des Vosges called Gallery Vivendi.

Q 3: Who is your inspiration when it comes to painting?

CVH: I am easily inspired by everything. I appreciate everything, so I love all art. I have a very eclectic taste in all things like music, furniture, antiques, design, art, architecture, etc. My absolute favorite artists would be Miro, Gaudi, Pegeen Vail (daughter of Peggy Guggenheim whose art I fell in love with in the Guggenheim in Venice!), Jean Helion (husband of Pegeen), Napoleon Bonaparte, Lao Lianben, Tim Burton, Yayoi Kusama, Shiro Kuramata, Jean Prouve, Jean Nouvel, Charlotte Perriand, Tadao Ando, Kisho Kurakawa, Coco Chanel, Woody Allen, Sophia Coppola, Rembrant, Ingres, Van Gogh, Le Corbusier, Tom Dixon, Philippe Starck, Bill Viola, Chuck Close, Delibes, Mozart, Bono…

Q 4: Describe your personal style.

CVH: I love very classical styles but used in a casual, random, almost accidental way such as using precious objects but presenting it like junk. I love to mix everything, compose things with humor and fun. I like displaying and wearing things in unconventional ways. I dislike convention and following trends. I like to mix things old and new, modern and antique, Asian and European, East and West.

Q 5: Aside from this upcoming exhibit, what other projects keep you busy?

CVH: My children are always my main priority. They keep me well occupied and entertained to the point of exhaustion. I also enjoy pottery, which really relaxes me. I probably made everything we use in our household. I like creating useful objects. I’ve also been busy writing a book for an artist, painter. I’m also designing a new line of mirrored scones and preparing for another exhibit in Ginza, Tokyo. I’m also designing furniture and doing the interior decoration of a private residence. In the future, I’d like to translate Martine’s Dilemma in French and have it published in France.

Q 6: Any tips for art enthusiasts, those who want to become an artist like you?

CVH: I think it’s necessary to believe in what you love and to appreciate everything that surrounds us-all of creation. It’s also important to know that how you see things isn’t how others view them. Art is an expression of our individuality. We are all unique. We are all different which is what makes life and art so interesting and fascinating. In saying this, there is also a sort of down side, you will always have critics, people who will not appreciate your aesthetic. It’s just a natural phenomenon. This shouldn’t influence you to start pleasing or giving your audience what they want, to start creating because that’s what people want. You should only create that which pleases you. It’s very easy to be influenced by society.

What will you do? What will you change? Be creative! be innovative! It can be simple to grand / utopian plan... or serious to fun-unrealistic one... grab your camera and roam the city and see what you can do... Urbanization* In a 1975 survey, one out of three people all over the world live in urban areas, with most of the 1.5 billion "urbanites" living in districts with less than a million residents. (Many of these urban dwellers, in fact, live in communities with a population of less than 5,000) Over the years, the urban residency has swelled significantly that half of the world's population is living in cities. Parallel to this growth in urban population (and the continuous rise of smaller cities) is the emergence of "mega-cities" -- urban areas of no less than 10 million people. Between 1975 and 2005, the number of mega-cities has grown from a meager three (two of which were in industrialized, first-world countries) to a record-breaking 20 (with 15 of them belonging in developing nations). SOURCE: United Nations Population Division, World Urbanization Prospects: The 2005 Revision (2006). Layers In East Asia alone, more than 2 million people have moved into urban areas. The rapid exodus to these specific areas indicates more opportunities in wealth and a chance for a better future for some. In the Philippines, where the Metro Manila region is the official hub of economy, education, and contemporary culture, more and more people from the rural areas are moving into the city to try their luck. Away from home, these people would often bring their customs and traditions with them as they settle in the metro; thus making their rural culture an integral part of the urban setting. There are layers upon layers of old and new structures; chaos in the streets; graffiti, may it be political or apolitical, street vendors, MMDA, gigantic billboards, and the overwhelming influence of Western cultures--malls in every district, pocket shanties, layers of sound - among others. And in the last 3 decades, Metro Manila became a very problematic region in terms of urban planning, drainage systems, pollution, over-population- -and these problems affect the city dwellers negatively. Urbanist Having lived in Manila for more than a decade, the projects that I am doing for W.O.P. will revolve around urbanism and the urban culture, and how artists, creatives, and ordinary people see their city in different perspectives. I will be doing personal and collaborative works that will be presented as exhibitions, screenings, talks etc. What is our role in changing the city? Project: The city as our creative juice This will be an online project, I will make a multiply or a blogger account wherein I will ask people living in the city (Manila, Cebu, Davao etc) to take a photo of a certain area wherein they want to improve. They will become an urban planner and encourages creativity in all its forms in ways that are intrinsic and integral to the daily life of the city. Just think that you are the current MMDA chairman. Be creative and innovative. No pink please… The project will be presented every Wednesday and the person who submitted a plan will be invited to show and discuss what he thinks should be improved. 				Mark Salvatus is a cross-disciplinary artist based in Manila and Lucban, Philippines. He graduated cum laude at the UST College of Fine Arts & Design and currently taking up MFA at the same university. Animahenasyon goes to UP Diliman

After the groundbreaking success of Animahenasyon 2008, the winning works and special citations of the second Pinoy animation festival will hold a special screening at the Ishmael Bernal Gallery in the University of the Philippines, Diliman campus on January 8-10 at 7 p.m.

Organized by the Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc. (ACPI), the grand prize winner of Animahenasyon 2008 is a narrative musical cartoon that relates the story of a Chinese-Filipino interracial marriage. "Love and Marriage," a jab at the folly of racial prejudice, is a comic take on this long-standing issue in the society captured in 7.5 minutes and seen through the eyes of its Chinese-Filipina filmmaker.

The brain and the hands behind of this masterpiece is Kenny Lynn Tai. She graduated from the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde with a degree on multimedia arts and is currently working for the Creative Media and Film Society of the Philippines (CREAM), and a background artist for the upcoming film "Pasintabi" of Tuldok Animation.

"I'm Tsinay. That's why I did a cartoon about Filipino-Chinese relationship, because I can relate. This cartoon is dedicated not only to Tsinoys, but also to all Filipinos who have encountered this issue," said Tai who won in the festival for the first time on her second year of participation.

Initially a painter, Tai wanted her paintings to come alive. She turned to animation in 2005 with her first cartoon music video, "Dr. Love" by Kiss. Her first character, Crossmouth, is also seen in one of the scenes of her award-winning piece. Tai is inspired by animation experts Miyazaki, Max Fleischer and Craig McCracken. To get her in the mood to work on her craft, she listens to contemporary and classical instrumental music.

Aside from "Love and Marriage," Tai also had two more entries for this year's contest: "Carrot Series," which won in the demo reel category, and "Don't Touch My Birdie."

The roster of the second Animahenasyon winners include "Just Tiis League" by Ivan Despi, "Sa Gabos na Panahon" by Raul Mimay, "Katchatore" and "We Give in Sometimes, both by Ivan Despi for the Professional Division; "Lupang Hinirang" by Rjay Morada, "Love and Marriage" by Kenny Lynn Tai, "Some Say" by Ruark Vallen Tapel, and "Carrot Series" by Kenny Lynn Tai for the Amateur Division.

Special citations were given to "Para sa Aking Anak na Natuton Gumapang" by Reginald Vinluan, "I'm Special, Are You?" by Gorio Vicuna, Mike Brum and Gabe de la Cruz, "Power Unleashed" by Sid Maderazo, "Fly Aswang" by Mark Galvez, "Rhose" by Narwuz Paguidopon, "Samtang Bilog" and "Buwan" by Jonathan Jurilla, "Hermano" by Rhodius Daduya, "Kukoman" by Ralph Crisostomo, "Anomi" by Renie Dimla, and Luchiby Celine Yao and Jonel Factor.

The annual Animahenasyon serves as a venue for Filipino animators to present their world-class ideas, a place for them to open doors of opportunities and a chance for them to meet and be inspired by the finest names in the industry.

After the WASAK year-ender, Fete de la Wasaque, (the festival that brought us 2-nights of wall shaking acoustic-meets-digital assault stirring acts), SABAW Media Art Kitchen opens this year with a very unique 1-hour "digital fireworks" display of live video art, live electronic music and live radio transmissions!

SABAW is pleased to welcome California-based composer, pianist, electronic musician, instrument-builder, CHRIS BROWN, who creates music for acoustic instruments with interactive electronics, for computer networks, and for improvising ensembles. He will be performing his Transmissions series in collaboration with media artist Tengal and the electronic sound-video performance collective, The Gangan Ensemble.

The "Transmissions" series is an audience interactive, live electronic music performance series about the transmission of culture through the information media of sound and radio. It redefines the relationship of performers and audience to the radio medium, opening audio spaces to unheard voices in diverse communities by emphasizing the ability of both to create both the content and the means of production of radio communication. For this performance, radios in automobiles are primarily going to be used since it provides a more familiar experience and is easily accessible today.

Using the outdoor parking space of Cubao X, Chris Brown and The Gangan Ensemble produce live electronic music, while video artist Tad Ermitano performs live video manipulation alongside the electro-magnetic sound tapestry. We are also pleased to feature the video works of California-based visual artist, Johanna Poethig. The live music is mixed into a stereo channel, which is sent to a low-power FM radio transmitter, assigned to a unique frequency where people in the performance space can tune in.

The audience is encouraged to bring their own cars and park them along the parking strip of Cubao X and turn up their radios to create an expansive sound tapestry. Apart from car radios, they are also encouraged to bring portable radio receivers, especially battery powered boom-boxes, mobile phone radios, and to tune in to the transmission channels while moving around the performance space. The audience is thus made a creative partner in the performance of the music, and the event becomes an interaction between the musicians, audience, and the sounds presented in the transmissions.

Think: Drive-in cinema. The audience can watch the live video projection and performers by either sitting inside or staying outside their cars while listening to the music coming from their car stereos.

According to Brown, "personal radios are electronic musical instruments that we all know how to play: we adjust their loudness and tone-quality to our taste and we move them around in our environments to accompany us in our lives."

ALSO: Before the concert performance in Cubao X on JANUARY 10, there will be two-nights of OPEN STUDIO SESSIONS with Chris Brown and the Gangan Ensemble at Green Papaya Art Projects on JANUARY 8 and 9. The OPEN STUDIO SESSIONS invites the public to be part of the creative process as the methods of the performance of composition and electronic music and the radio transmissions shall be discussed, and where they can also interact with the artists. This will benefit people who are particularly interested in various issues in composition, improvisation, and performing electronic music in general.

BIOGRAPHIES:

Chris Brown, composer, pianist, and electronic musician, creates music for acoustic instruments with interactive electronics, for computer networks, and for improvising ensembles. Recent recordings of his music include "Boundary Layer", a 3-CD box set of new and old computer network music by The Hub, on Tzadik, "Cutter Heads ", duets with Fred Frith on Intakt, "Talking Drum", binaural recordings of interactive installations interleaved with environmental soundscapes on Sonore; and "Lava", for brass percussion and electronics on Tzadik. He is also known for his recorded performances of music by Henry Cowell, Luc Ferrari, Jose Maceda, David Rosenboom, Larry Ochs, Wadada Leo Smith, and John Zorn. He has also performed and recorded extensively with The Hub, Anthony Braxton, Pauline Oliveros, Fred Frith, Rova Saxophon Quartet, Ikue Mori, Alvin Curran, William Winant, Glenn Spearman Double Trio, among others. In 2005 he created TeleSon, a composition for two ReacTable instruments performed in a joint concert between Ars Electronic in Linz, Austria and the International Computer Music Conference in Barcelona, Spain. He teaches electronic music and composition at Mills College in Oakland, where he is Co-Director of the Center for Contemporary Music (CCM).

Tengal is a Manila-based interdisciplinary media artist, composer-musician, and filmmaker working with various mediums. He curates and organizes, as well as participates in various media art shows in the Philippines and abroad. His work puts the focus on direct experience, risk-taking and personal interaction between artists and audience, and emphasizes the situational potential of live performance, the interplay of various media – sound and image, in particular – and candid exchange between sub-cultural and academic initiatives. He founded SABAW Media Art Kitchen – a not-for-profit, artist-run initiative and network platform for all kinds of information and communication carried via modern electronic media focused specially in the region of South East Asia.

The Gangan Ensemble is loosely composed of improvisers on both sound and video. Having a mixture of electronic and acoustic musicians, live video performance artists or VJs also participate. The ensemble has had various permutations involving a variety of artists and musicians from the Philippines, Singapore, USA, Germany, Australia, UK, Slovenia, Malaysia, and Indonesia since 2007. The ensemble is flexible, having been composed from fifteen people down to three people; and has performed in various countries in South East Asia, notably in NCCA's Sinemusikalye in Manila and in the Cellsbutton Media Art Festival in Indonesia. It was founded by composer-improviser Tengal with video artist Tad Ermitano.

Caliph 8 is a beat smith, graffiti bomber and soothsayer. A lynch-pin of various groups and ensembles, he's probably the most sought after sound manipulator in the Philippines. His output extends to more than just sniffing aerosol paint and flexing wrists with fat markers–he also creates visuals and projects them while manipulating audio and creates sound collage.

Malek Lopez is a Berkeley-trained virtuoso who is the principal composer for the band Drip, and half of the abrasive electronica duo Rubber Inc, who are responsible for establishing electronica in Manila. He is also a well-noted film composer.

Inconnu ictu a.k.a Roger Llagas Lopez is a post-musician, experimental composer-improviser, multi-instrumentalist, visual art enthusiast who resides in the shoe capital of the Philippines. As a sound constructor he explores his interest by using obsolete electronic gadgets, pedal fx boxes, defective rhythm consoles, found objects, d.i.y microphones and circuit-bent electronics.

Blums Borres guitarist and media artist who experiments with sound, video, and animation. Formerly a technical director at Toei Animation Philippines, he has a BA in Multimedia Design from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. His work has been featured at the Australian Center Moving Images (ACMI), and in cinemas and television in Japan.

Lirio Salvador is a multi-media experimental artist and is probably the most influential and astonishing homemade circuit-benders and instrument builders in the country. He established the E.X.I.S.T. sound art collective back in 2002. He creates his assemblage of musical instruments using day to day materials that are found in his present environment, including bicycle gears, drain cleaning springs and stainless steel tubes.

Tad Ermitano is a media artist, writer and filmmaker. As far as the media art goes, he is interested in algorithmic/procedural editing and composition, new uses for the moving image and have been lately drifting into elementary robotics. His work "Quartet" was exhibited in the recently concluded International Symposium for Electronic Arts (ISEA) in Singapore.

Johanna Poethig is a visual, public and performance artist who has exhibited internationally and has been actively creating public art works, murals, paintings, sculpture and multimedia installations for over 20 years. She has worked in collaboration with other artists, architects, urban planners, design teams, arts commissions, specific communities and cultural groups. Poethig's public art works intervene in the urban landscape, in neighborhoods, on freeways, in parks, hospitals, schools, homeless shelters, cultural centers, advertising venues and public buildings. She has received numerous commissions and awards for this work. Her paintings, sculpture and installations reflect her interest in satire, symbol, human nature, society and our consumerist culture. She has produced and participated in performance events that mix feminism, global politics, costume, props, cabaret, experimental music and video.

BIOGRAPHY
Eric de Guia (born October 3, 1942 in Baguio City),
better known as Kidlat Tahimik, is a filmmaker,
writer, artist and actor whose films are commonly
associated through their critiques of neocolonialism
with the Third World Cinema movement.
Tahimik studied at the University of Pennsylvania' s
Wharton School of Business, earned a Master in
Business Administration, and worked as a researcher
for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and
Development (OECD) in Paris from 1968 to 1972 before
"returning home to be a filmmaker and ending as a
G-stringed (bahag) adopted son of Ifugao."
Tahimik grew up in Baguio City, Philippines, a summer
resort community established in the presence of
several U.S. Military bases. This experience was a
weighty influence on the themes of his films, most
notably the semi-autobiographic al Perfumed Nightmare
(1977) and Turumba (1981). That latter of these two
provides some insight into the circumstances that
brought him to Europe and into the presence of
filmmaker Werner Herzog, who along with director
Francis Ford Coppola and his American Zoetrope Films
was instrumental in helping to release Perfumed
Nightmare in America. This groundbreaking film went on
to win the international film critics jury prize at
the Berlin Film festival, as well as the Catholic Jury
Prize and the Ecumenical Jury prize.

The International League of Peoples’ Struggle Working Group on
Teachers, Researchers, and other Education Personnel invites
academics, scholars, researchers, education and social activists and
progressive intellectuals to an international conference on
"Education, Imperialism, and Resistance," to be held in Shih Hsin
University, Taipei, Taiwan on August 10-11, 2009. It will be hosted by
the International Center for Taiwan Social Studies and Taiwan: A
Radical Quarterly in Social Studies.
The conference aims to bring together academics and social activists
to put forward a progressive critique of imperialism and education.
Imperialism is at the root of untold suffering for billions of people
throughout the world. Imperialist banks and corporations reap huge
profits from the exploitation of working people even as the world
economy is racked by crises, the gap between rich and poor countries
widens, hundreds of millions are thrown into unemployment, billions
are kept in poverty, and environmental destruction proceeds unabated.
The imperialist countries, led by the United States, wage wars of
aggression to control valuable markets and resources and suppress
revolutionary movements. All over the world, imperialism intensifies
the oppression of women, exacerbates racial and ethnic conflicts, and
incites discrimination against migrants.
In the guise of neoliberal globalization, imperialism is having a
devastating impact on education. Drastic cuts in public spending for
education have become the norm. Teachers, researchers, and other
education personnel suffer deteriorating standards of living as
salaries fail to keep up with rising costs. Large numbers are being
laid off as governments close down schools and universities deemed
inefficient. As education becomes the flashpoint for popular
struggles, schools and universities are increasingly subjected to
state repression.
Imperialism exercises an ever-tightening grip on education. The WTO's
General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) has placed
liberalization of the so-called education market and the privatization
of education on the agenda of future negotiations, along with other
basic social services. Teaching and research are to an unprecedented
extent driven and defined by corporate interests.
Imperialist control of education is a key element in imperialist
domination of culture as a whole. U.S. imperialism, in particular,
makes full use of the means at its disposal—chiefly its huge
monopolies in mass media—to shape world public opinion according to
its interests. Monopolies have increasing influence over curricula,
education programs, institutional organization, and research agendas.
Struggle over knowledge and research is a key aspect of struggles
against imperialism. On the one hand, imperialist domination of
education and research is used to undermine people’s struggles. On the
other, a critique of imperialist ideology can be an important tool in
the struggle for radical structural change. Throughout the world
today, education workers respond to imperialist globalization through
solidarity and struggle to defend their rights and welfare, the
people’s right to education, and advance the struggle for a more just
and humane future for all.
Participants to the conference are invited to present a critique of
any aspect of imperialism and education including access to education,
education sector reforms on neoliberal lines, right to education and
livelihood, the political economy of education, the politics and
theories of knowledge production and research, the impact of
privatization and liberalization on educators and students and the
impacts of education sector reforms on societies. We encourage
interdisciplinary approaches to these concerns.

Individual papers and panel presentations on the general theme are
most welcome. Specific papers on any of the following themes may be
submitted for consideration. Tracks correspond to the possible
organization of the plenary sessions. The program committee reserves
the right to merge, reschedule or reassign topics, based on
suggestions and interest from the participants.

final schedule of presentations. Selected papers will be considered
for publication, after peer review.

Papers should be prepared and presented in English. There is no page
limit but contributors are encouraged to limit their paper to less
than or equal to 20 pages (A4 paper, font 12, double-spaced) including
the cover page, abstract, text, references, tables and figures. The
format should follow standard academic styles.

An abstract of not more than 500 words, together with a one-page
resume of the proponent, must be submitted to the Conference
Secretariat on or before 31 January 2009 at the following email address:

Presentations should be limited to 15 minutes including Q & A.
Proposals for artistic performances (music, poetry, exhibits) must be

Outstanding papers and presentations will be awarded in the closing
ceremonies, based on the following criteria: innovation, significant
contribution in the theory and practice of education and resistance,
and other criteria to be identified by the Program Committee.

An Open Letter from the Office of the Student Regent

Warm greetings!

As the university heads to the final days of its year-long centennial celebration, I have observed that one historical landmark of the students' democratic struggle inside the academe remains largely ignored- the creation of the Office of the Student Regent (OSR).

Now that the university looks back on its 100 years of existence, the significance of the OSR must not be ignored or forgotten. For the office is a concrete product of the UP Students' sustained efforts for the representation in the Board of Regents (BOR), the highest policy-making body in the University. The BOR was once dominated by personalities appointed by Marcos. And although the students formed the largest sector in the university, there was no student representative in the body.

The students, however, fearlessly pushed for their democratic rights. Even during Martial Law, they held massive student demonstrations inside and outside the academe, determined in the face of repression from both Malacanang and the UP Administration. As the students' campaign reached its peak, the administration relented. Pres. Corazon Aquino approved Executive Order No. 204, which led to the inauguration of the OSR. Since then, the office has become a symbol of victory for the UP studentry in asserting their democratic demands to the BOR.

Historically, the office has spearheaded the fight for greater state subsidy by initiating lobbying efforts in Congress and student actions. It has also stood up against discrimination on the basis of class, gender, race and religion. For this is the mandate of the OSR- to safeguard the interests of the students at all times.

Despite several attempts to render the OSR impotent in its duty to serve the students and the people, it has struggled to remain loyal to its function by pushing for measures to ensure the quality and accessibility of UP education and to realign the thrust of the university along the democratic interests of the people. At the locus of the campaign for student rights and welfare across UP units is the sole student representative to the BOR.

Ironically, the OSR is hounded by uncertainties, even as the whole university looks confidently to another 100 years. Traditionally, the General Assembly of Student Councils approves the Codified Rules for Student Regent Selection. The new UP Charter, however, obliges a referendum of students in order to approve the selection process for the Student Regent. The mandatory referendum is a move by the state and administration to invalidate the student-crafted selection process which exhibits student autonomy and self-governance.

A referendum is a logistical difficulty. The process requires more than half of the entire population of UP students nationwide to cast their votes in favor of the OSR. There are two possible scenarios, should the students fail to clinch the majority vote: the office may be left vacant, leaving the students without representation in the BOR, or the office may still be occupied, but by a Malacanang-appointe d student regent. Either way, the institutional autonomy of the OSR is undermined. This presents dangerous implications for the office, whose commitment to democratic rights is ensured, in part, by its independence from Malacanang and administration intervention.

Sadly, these bleak scenarios come at a time when student representation in the BOR is much needed. Today, the rightful role of students in the development of the university and country is being challenged at all fronts, from the reduction of state subsidy to the militarization of campuses. It is worth noting that year after year, the state has slashed added income. Meanwhile, legitimate student institutions and formations at the forefront of campaigns against commercialization are met with suppression.

At this landmark moment in history, there is no other way to succeed over threats against our rights to representation than to collectively rise up to the challenge of a referendum. At a time of crisis, we are tasked to protect, defend, and uphold our sole voice in the BOR, in the same way that we are tasked to advance our democratic struggle against commercialization of education and campus repression, not just for ourselves but for the future generations. Now that the office is in peril, let us continue the spirit of vigilance and persistence that led to the founding of the OSR.

With the firm resolve demonstrated by those who fought for the OSR, I call on the broadest number of UP students across the entire university system to support the campaign to defend the OSR and prove, once and for all, that measures meant to impede our democratic rights shall fail against the collective militancy of the students. By defending our basic rights to be represented, we concretely reaffirm our democratic struggle for greater state subsidy, for tambayans, and for our right to organize.

Once more, history demands that students register the potency of collective action in the fight for freedom and democracy inside and outside the university. We will respond to this challenge, valiant and united.

Public Art Call for Zaha Hadid designed building

MAXXItwopercent is a competition being held by the Inter-Regional Superintendency for Public Works of Lazio, Abruzzo and Sardinia, in collaboration with the PARC General Directorate for the Quality and Conservation of the Contemporary Landscape, Architecture and Art. Open to young artists, the competition calls for the design of two works of art for the MAXXI National Museum of 21st Century Art in Rome.

The total prize money available for the competition is 1,130,000.00 Euro. The competition makes reference to Italian Law n.717 from 1949, known as the “2% Law”, according to which State Governing Bodies and Public Entities who build or rebuild public buildings (in the event of damages caused by the Second World War) must set aside a quota of no less than 2% of the cost of construction for beautification works and works of art (art. 1, comma 1).

The MAXXI, the large public art and architecture museum designed by Zaha Hadid includes the design of two new works of visual art, one of which will be located in the main atrium, the other outside the building.

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts' National Committeeon Cultural Education (NCCA-NCCEd) announces the convening of a seriesof island-clustered Forum on Informal, Non-Formal and AlternativeCultural Education (INFACE) on January 8-9 (Cebu City); January 19-20(Davao City); and January 22-23 (Manila).

The two-day forum series is part of a nationwide constituency- basedconsultation on previous and current INFACE efforts by community-basedartists, cultural workers, educators, local government units, NGO artscouncils, and culture-oriented people's organizations. As conceived,the project hopes to mainstream, replicate and support best practicesin INFACE program initiatives through the NCCA's Philippine CulturalEducation Program (PCEP).

The project will undertake an enquiry on the history, nature andprocess of engagement of community-based cultural education work inthe regions and identify modalities and operative frameworks whichPCEP could adopt for its INFACE programming. it is hoped that bestpractices in the grassroots level will be mainstreamed and replicatedand resources could be shared between an engaged network ofGO-LGU-NGO-PO partnership.

The NCCA NCCEd has invited representatives of selected culturalnetworks as official participants but a limited number of slots isstill open to other artists' organizations, local LGU and NGO arts andculture councils, local government units' culture, arts and tourismoffices, and other networks of cultural educators with at least threeyears of sustained cultural education work for specific sectors.

Interested parties may send application enquiries on participationdetails and eligibilities with a brief profile of theirorganizations/ networks' history, extent and coverage of culturaleducation work in the communities, and name and brief profile ofnominated participant- representative.

Each confirmed participant will be provided meals and sharedaccommodations for the duration of the Forum and reimbursement ofround-trip fare subsidy to and from the venue of specificisland-clustered forum. .

Guidelines

1. All filmmakers are eligible to join the Sinulog 2009 Short Film Festival – the
commercial or non-commercial, both amateurs and professionals.
2. Interested parties must be able to accomplish and/ or submit the following,
on or before January 16, 2009, Friday, 5 PM, to:

c. two (2) recent 2x2 photos of the registering filmmaker

3. Registration of Five Hundred Pesos (Php 500.00) should be paid upon
submission of the above-mentioned requirements.
4. Official Identification Cards (IDs) will be provided by the Sinulog
Foundation Office and should be worn at all times by the participants
while doing the actual shoot for the group’s convenience and proper
identification.
5. The final produced-entry for the Sinulog 2009 Short Film Festival, be it a
video documentary or short film, must be submitted in DVD format on or before January 25, 2009, 5PM, to the Sinulog 2009 Short Film Festival Secretariat.
The entries should be titled.
Before it’s submission, it should be properly labeled with the following information:
a. title of the Video Documentary or Short Film;
b. production company;
c. full name/s of the director/s;
d. full name/s of the producer/s;
e. contact number/s of the filmmakers; and
f. running time
6. The preferred running time of the video documentary is minimum of five (5)
minutes and a maximum of ten (10) minutes while for the short films,
minimum is also five (5) minutes and maximum of fifteen (15) minutes.
7. All qualified participants will be required to attend the briefing with the
Sinulog 2009 Short Film Festival Committee at the Sinulog Foundation Office on January 16, 2009,
Friday, 8PM.
10. Ten (10) finalists will be chosen among the qualified entries.
11. Those who have submitted their finished product will be required to attend
the Announcement of Winners and Grand Awarding on ________________________ at the ___________________________.
12. The decision of the Board of Judges is deemed to be final and should be
regarded with respect and cordiality.

Rules & Regulations

1. All entries by any citizen/s of Mother Earth shall be accepted.
2. All requirements in the Guidelines must be duly accomplished.
3. A registration fee of Five Hundred Pesos (Php 500.00), in cash, or in
check, payable to the Sinulog Foundation, will be required upon
registration. An official receipt from the Sinulog Foundation Office will be issued accordingly.
4. Short stories should be about an experience related to the Señor Sto. Niño
while documentaries must be taken during the actual one-month
Sinulog 2009 celebration. Footages of previous years’ Sinulog
Festivals can also be used as excerpts or as part of the whole work for
both.
5. All entries must be completely original and independently produced.
6. Entries that have been previously exhibited in any public screening will
be considered ineligible.
7. All entries must be in digital video format (i.e. digital editing and post-
production).
8. Two (2) DVD copies must be submitted for screening and archival
purposes.
9. Due to copyright laws, the music used in the documentary must be
original, licensed, or in the public domain.
10. For joint-directorial efforts, the filmmakers must assign a single
representative to act on their behalf. All official correspondence
shall then be addressed to the representative. The organizing committee shall not be held responsible for any controversy that might ensue amongst the partners with regards to this competition.
11. The Sinulog 2009 Short Film Festival Secretariat will ensure the safety of
the films throughout the period in which cinematographic materials are in its custody. In case of print loss or damage, Sinulog Foundation is obligated only for the cost of replacing the damaged DVD, that is why we advise the participants to keep extra copy/copies for replacement in case this thing happens.
12. DVD shipments to the Sinulog 2008 Short Film Festival Secretariat must
be prepaid. The organizing office shall not accept any collect shipments of the entry.
13. Sinulog Foundation, Inc., which is the organizer of this event, reserves all
intellectual rights to show and distribute all 10 finalists-entries in their perpetuity.

Philippine International Arts Festival

Philippine International Arts Festival

For 18 years now, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts
(NCCA) has been organizing the National Arts Month (NAM) in the month
of February with a series of festivities and activities mounted
throughout the country celebrating Filipino artistry and promoting the
arts and the artists. For 2009, the celebration takes a leap by going
international under the name Philippine International Arts Festival
(PIAF).

It will feature the talents and performances of the many artists and
arts groups in the seven arts on whose trainings, competitions, and
creative expressions it has invested the past year or so. More than a
way of looking back at past accomplishments, the festival will be a
celebration of the fruits of the creative efforts for the past year
and a looking forward to a richer, more fertile ground in the coming
years for the evolution of artistic modes of expression available to
the Filipino creative imagination.

The National Arts Month started with Presidential Proclamation No. 683
in 1991. Now, the NCCA, led by its Chairman, DepEd Usec. Dr. Vilma
Labrador and Executive Director Cecile Guidote-Alvarez, through the
NAM Artistic Committee headed by Prof. Ricardo de Ungria, Commissioner
of the NCCA-Subcommission on the Arts (SCA), is taking the celebration
to the next level by calling National Arts Month the Philippine
International Arts Festival (PIAF) for next year.

Selected artists from different countries are expected to join in the
different PIAF events through the PIAF Artistic Committee in
coordination with the Philippine International Theatre Institute (ITI)
through its Sec. General Malou Jacob, also concurrent NCCA Executive
Director.

All over the country, different arts and culture groups as well as
local governments will hold events for the PIAF with funding and
support from the NCCA. With the theme "Ani ng Sining," the PIAF has
evolved from Manila-centered activities to a truly national event with
key activities in all three major island groups, Luzon, Visayas,
Mindanao, involving hundreds of artists from different disciplines of
arts and reaching thousands of people from all walks of life and all
over the world.

Some of the highlights to look forward to in the PIAF on February 2009
are:

* The Ani ng Sining Launching. PIAF Ani ng Sining will formally open
in three venues: Launching on TV (Sunday noontime variety program);
Sining Gising of NBN 4 and Concert at the Park with delayed telecast
in NBN 4. Philippine International Arts Festival will also
simultaneously be launched in major sites in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
* PA(ng)LABAS. The project is a composite of a traveling exhibition,
lecture-forum, and a film showing which will to examine both the
medium of film and the form and style of architecture as they relate
to the development of film media, architecture and urban landscape.
The title Pa(ng)labas is doubly coded to encompass both the concepts
of projected moving image (palabas) and the exteriority of
architecture (panglabas) to establish a sense of place. It will happen
from February 9 to 13, 2009 at Cine Adarna, Aldaba Theater,
University Theater of the University of the Philippines; from February
16 to 20, 2009, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines; and from
February 23 to 27, 2009 at the University of San Carlos in Cebu.
* Walai-Vernacular Architecture of Mindanao. This is an architectural
drawing and photography exhibit of the vernacular houses of Mindanao
culled from the Walai Pangampong project, complemented with a lecture
series, selected ritual dances and craft works associated with house
building and construction, and a model replica of selected indigenous
structure. It is slated from February 1 to 6, 2009.
* Sinerehiyon. This is a showcase of nascent cinema from the regions.
From the highlands in and around Baguio to the heart of Bicolandia
that is Naga City; across the thriving Visayas cities of Cebu, Bacolod
and Iloilo; and through Mindanao between Cagayan de Oro and Davao, a
new generation of artists is telling stories of their own cultures and
people in cinematic form. This will be from February 17 to 19 at the CCP.
* Sayaw Pinoy. This touring dance concert brings together different
dance forms and features local dance troupes of the host cities and
municipalities performing back-to-back with the different professional
dance companies in the country. This will from February 6 to 9 for the
Visayas and NCR regions; from February 13 to 16 for Mindanao; and
February 20 to 23 for Luzon.
* Tanghal! The 3rd National University Theater Festival. Hosted by
Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Calamba, the event will feature
university-based theatre groups from Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao and NCR
in cooperation with the Lusong Luzon Arts and Culture Network. It will
happen from February 10 to 14, 2009 at the Colegio de San Juan de
Letran-Calamba.
* Taboan: Philippine Writers Festival. This is will be a celebration
of the word—written, painted, sung, or performed—and will assemble
writers from all the regions and across generations who will interact
with one another and with their audience on issues pertaining to their
craft or the situation of writing in the country, or read from their
new works. This will happen from February 11 to 13, 2009 at the UP
Diliman, Ateneo de Manila and Cubao Expo.
* Organik Muzik. This is a series of four concerts showing the
metamorphosis of elements of Philippine music from village roots to
urban manifestations, from Cordillera traditions to Kadangyan's world
music, from Leyteño siday to Junior Kilat's reggae Binisaya, from
GAMABA Awardee Samaon Sulaiman's virtuoso kutyapi-playing to the
hard-driving neo-ethnic rock of Popong Landero, from flights of
Balagtasan to the acid-jazz rants of Lourd de Veyra and Radioactive
Sago. Musical innovator Joey Ayala weaves the journey towards a
coherent whole. It will happen on February 7, 2009 at SM Baguio;
February 14, 2009 at SM Cebu; February 21, 2009 at SM Davao; and
February 28, 2009 at SM Mall of Asia.
* Philippine Visual Arts Festival '09. It will be a convergence of
selected various Filipino and International Artists from the different
regions of the country. it will feature the talents and performances
of the artists and groups in the visual arts whose trainings,
competitions and creative expressions it has invested the past year or so

"KUTSILYO, PAMAYPAY AT YANTOK"

Tanghalang Pilipino in cooperation with the GMA 7 Artist Center is mounting a trilogy entitled, "Kutsilyo, Pamaypay at Yantok." First presented in 1984 at the University of the Philippines , Kutsilyo, Pamaypay at Yantok is composed of three episodes that probe deeper into the characters of Maria Clara, Salome and Sisa, and the men in their lives – Ibarra, Elias and Pedring, respectively. The three male characters are the roles that the late Marky Cielo dreamt of doing before his untimely death.

The first episode, "Ang Balutan ng Gamot at Pagkain," written by Nick Pichay parodies the usually dramatic characterization of Maria Clara and Ibarra. Tanghalang Pilipino Actors' Company (TP-AC) scholar Tara Cabaero plays Maria Clara opposite AC apprentice Jonathan Tadioan as Ibarra. Marky Cielo was rehearsing this role before he passed away.

The second episode, "Kabanata X," written by Chris Millado is a tender scene between Elias and Salome to be played by Starstruck survivor Ryza Cenon opposite Mike Tan, another GMA 7 artist. Alternating with them are TP's Anna Deroca and Russell Legaspi.

"Ang Nazarena," the third and final episode, also written by Chris Millado, is a violent scene that dramatizes the physical and mental torture that Sisa suffers in the hands of her abusive husband and that leads to the complete loss of her sanity. TP scholar Kat Castillo and PHSA theater arts graduate Meile Romero alternate as Sisa while TP scholars Chrome Cosio and Riki Benedicto alternate as Elias.

Kutsilyo, Pamaypay at Yantok will be staged under the direction of Tess Jamias at the CCP Tanghalang Huseng Batute from January 13 to January 15, 2009 (Wednesday to Friday), with matinees at 3:00 PM and evening shows at 8:00PM. An excellent experiential learning material, this trilogy is recommended for high school students studying Noli Me Tangere and college student's taking up Rizal's life and works, theater arts, humanities, literature, history and other social science courses. These classic scene studies are also good for all theater enthusiasts.

About Diwa
Diwa de Leon is a award-winning composer/arranger/ violinist/ hegalong player/recording artist who has been working in the industry for more than a decade now. He is a founding member of the world music band Makiling.

His most recent major works include the official theme music for Survivor Philippines GMA, the soundtrack of indie film Kolorete (directed by Ruelo Lozendo), all arrangements of “The Little Prince” musical staged by the Young Artists Productions, the soundtrack of indie film Pandanggo (produced by Cinema One Originals) and numerous songs and pieces from Makiling’s upcoming 3rd album, Malakas at Maganda.

Beginning 2009, fifteen Philippine libraries will be participating in a permanent public installation of artworks by New York-based artist Renato Orara. The installation, consisting of drawings hidden in library books, will be heralded by Library Bookworks, his one-month solo show at SLab.

For his first gallery exhibition in the Philippines, Orara renders human ears in library books and produces corresponding photographic prints with the books' call number labels affixed to them. The library books are shelved in libraries, while the photo prints are displayed in the gallery. These prints also serve as maps that disclose the locations of the drawings. To begin the search for the original artworks, one may come to the gallery to view the photo prints, jot down the works' call numbers, and obtain a list of participating libraries. Thus the gallery becomes a library while the libraries become the galleries.

For over a decade, Renato Orara’s works have garnered international critical acclaim. His works are simple yet extreme. Orara's ballpoint ink works on paper, meticulously rendered and densely layered, seem to embody a reality that transcends that of the object that serves as his subject. Viewing reproductions of his work is not enough preparation for the astonishing experience of seeing the original work. His works have been featured in exhibitions in many cities including New York City, Paris, Brussels, Basel, and Miami, and are in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Library Bookworks by Renato Orara runs from January 8 to February 14, 2009 at SLab (Silverlens Lab). There will be an opening reception on January 8, Thursday at 6pm. Renato Orara will have a live online artist talk on January 17, Saturday at 12pm. Library Bookworks will be shown along with Family Spaces by Stella Kalaw at Silverlens Gallery.
